[Shinsegae International] Giving Impetus to Eco-friendly Management

Reducing 267 Tons of Paper Annually by Reducing Packaging Materials for Parcel Service!

- Efforts to reduce usage after completely replacing delivery packaging materials with paper in 2021

- Reducing the volume of boxes and filling materials by 32% by introducing paper bags

- Minimizing environmental impact by using eco-certified paper tape and recycled polybags

- Gradually applying to brands shipped through S.I.VILLAGE starting this month

Shinsegae International is promoting eco-friendly management by reducing the delivery packaging materials.

Shinsegae International announced on the 7th that it will actively practice a sustainable management policy by reducing the amount of paper packaging and subsidiary materials used for delivery by one-third or more starting this month.

According to the 'Korea Social Trends 2022' report published by Statistics Korea, as non-face-to-face consumption increases, it turned out that more than 70 delivery boxes are used per person per year, and 'waste paper and other' emissions such as delivery packaging materials have also increased by 21.1% per year.

Shinsegae International plans to reduce annual paper usage by about 32% compared to the previous amount by reducing packaging materials. This is equivalent to about 267 tons of paper, and considering that 17 30-year-old pine trees are needed to produce 1 ton of paper, it is the same as protecting 4,539 trees.

First, 2.5mm thick packaging boxes and paper bags are introduced in addition to the 4mm thick packaging boxes previously used in bulk. Optimal packaging materials tailored to the nature and size of each delivered product will be differentially applied, which is expected to reduce paper usage by 229 tons per year.

In addition, paper-filling materials such as shock absorbers and safety bags to prevent product damage will be changed from the existing four types to two types. Through a two-year testing period after the introduction of paper filler, packaging materials are designed to deliver products most safely while reducing unnecessary use, and by changing the filler, it will be possible to reduce paper usage by about 34 tons further.

In addition to reducing paper usage, subsidiary materials are replaced with more environmentally friendly products.

The paper tape used for the box is an eco-friendly certified product using water-based coating and water-based adhesive, which means that it can be easily separated and discharged as paper without the need to remove it. Small-sized polybags (plastic packaging bags) used for some clothing that may get wet from rain or snow will be replaced with polybags made from recycled raw materials. Using 100% recycled plastic polybags instead of packaging materials made of existing polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) raw materials reduced plastic use by 50% compared to before.

Starting this month, this policy will be sequentially introduced to all of Shinsegae International's brand products shipped from its digital platform, S.I.VILLAGE. All paper materials used for delivery are produced from FSC® certified materials and are 100% recyclable. They can be easily separated and discharged as paper without any additional handling. However, products shipped directly from the store are excluded.

“We have been thinking about ways to reduce the amount of packaging material itself after changing all delivery packaging and subsidiary materials to paper in 2021, resulting in a reduction of more than 50 tons of plastic waste per year,” said an official from Shinsegae International, “We will fulfill our corporate social responsibility by practicing eco-friendly solutions for a sustainable environment in line with consumption patterns.”
